Fasting
Scripture:
31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:31-34
Devotional:
Our focus shifts easily if we are not careful. Over time we can integrate something in our lives that unintentionally takes priority. Whether that’s an addiction or a person, we have to make sure we have God first above everything.
That’s why fasting is important. Fasting is giving up something so that we can give our full attention to God and to make sure we don’t put anything before Him.
A good rule that I like to use when deciding what to fast is pray first and let God put something on your heart to give up. If it’s hard for me to give up, then it’s probably what I need to let go.
Fasting can also work as a reset. In life we get too comfortable with a bad practice or habit. Fasting can help us take a step back and evaluate our lifestyle.
Our minds like to make us think we need something when really what we are attached to could be causing more harm than good. God will provide if we seek Him. He will give us everything we need. So don’t worry about what you might lose in the process.
I want to encourage you to practice fasting and see how God can transform His relationship with you.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for all that you bless us with. I pray that we never put creation over the Creator. Help us to fast and draw closer to you. We love you and thank you for loving us.
Amen
