Rain Clouds Gathering
Scripture:
34Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 36Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel would set out; 37but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day when it was taken up. 38For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.
Exodus 40:34-35
13in unison when the trumpeters and the singers were to make themselves heard with one voice to praise and to glorify the LORD, and when they lifted up their voice accompanied by trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and when they praised the LORDsaying, “He indeed is good for His lovingkindness is everlasting,” then the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, 14so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God.
2 Chronicles 5:13-14
Devotional:
Have you ever noticed how the air changes before a steady rain? The sky grows heavy. The wind quiets. There is a holy stillness before the downpour. In the Spirit, seasons shift in much the same way.
Throughout Scripture, clouds often marked the nearness of God. In Exodus, when the tabernacle was finished, the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled it. In 2 Chronicles, when Solomon dedicated the temple, the priests could not stand to minister because the glory filled the house. The pattern is powerful: when God’s people prepare a place, He fills it with His presence.
Today, we are His dwelling place. The Lord is not merely seeking buildings to inhabit but hearts surrendered to Him. He desires to fill His people with His glory—His character, His holiness, His love, His power. Sometimes before that filling comes, there is a weightiness in our spirits. A sense of pressing. A hunger that will not be satisfied with routine faith.
Do not mistake that heaviness for distance. It may be the gathering of glory clouds.
Clouds form when vapor rises. In the same way, our prayers, worship, repentance, and obedience rise before the Lord. Nothing offered in sincerity is wasted. Heaven gathers it. And in due time, what has been rising begins to return as rain—refreshing, renewing, restoring.
Perhaps you feel dry. Perhaps your church feels like it is waiting. Perhaps you personally sense a stretching. Take heart. God delights in filling what has been prepared. He responds to hunger. He honors consecration. He inhabits surrendered spaces.
The rain is not meant to puddle in one place; it is meant to overflow. When God fills you, it will touch your family, your leadership, your conversations, your community. His glory always carries purpose beyond the individual.
So in this season, do not rush the clouds away. Stand under them. Lift your face. Open your heart. The same God who filled the tabernacle and the temple longs to fill you.
Personal Application:
What in my life needs clearing away so God can fill it more fully?
Where have I mistaken spiritual “weight” for absence instead of expectancy?
How can I posture my heart daily to welcome His glory?
Prayer:
Lord, prepare me as Your dwelling place.
Clear away anything that resists Your presence.
Let my prayers rise like vapor before You.
And when the time is right, let Your glory fall— not just to refresh me, but to overflow through me.
Amen.
