Steadfast Prayer

Scripture:

2Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,  whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 1:2-4

11. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

James 5:11

13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

James 5:13-16

Devotional:

At the end of 2025, I did a study on the book of James and fell in love with the words of James. It ultimately helped me through the season of life that I was in and grew my intimacy with Christ. There are a few specific things that I took from the book as a whole.

  • God wants His children to come to Him in prayer at all times, in all seasons, and for all reasons.

  • God’s actions are not dependent on the amount of faith we have.

  • If our whole focus is how much WE can do for God, how devoted WE are to him, and how much WE love him– rather than how much HE does for us and how much HE loves us – eventually we’ll find ourselves in a pity party apart from the cross.

  • We are to be joyful through our trials because the production of perseverance is creating spiritual maturity.

During this study of James, I was challenged to dive deep into my prayer life, reflect on how often I prayed and what I was praying for, and, essentially, evaluate my intimacy with the Holy Spirit. The verses I chose today were among my favorites. The first one we are going to discuss is James 1:2-4, which says, 2Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”  What I began to realize during each trial that I would encounter, I  would speak this passage over my situation, and it was almost as if my fear, anxiety, or stress would begin to go away. When you truly hone in on praying during your trials and accepting that you don’t have to do it alone or by your own power, the load begins to get lighter.

The next passage we are going to read is James 5:11.” As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.” From this passage, we are reminded of the perseverance Job experienced in the Old Testament. If you don’t know/remember the story, let me shorten it for you.  Job was a VERY faithful man of the Lord, and Satan was very aware of his dedication. Satan came to God with a proposal that basically asked if he could try to sway Job to follow him instead of the Almighty. So God’s response was, “Okay, sure, just don’t kill him.” During this process, Job experienced boils, lost all his livestock, lost his servants, and ultimately lost his family. But do you know what Job did? He prayed. Job was steadfast in prayer. At the end of the story, God blessed him tenfold. I tell you this story not to say that God will give us exactly what we pray for; he can, but sometimes it doesn’t always turn out exactly how we picture it.

The last passage we are going to reference is James 5: 13-16.13Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”   I love the last part of this verse, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” When we remain steadfast in prayer, God hears us, and he will even speak to us if we really listen.

Prayer:

Father,

Thank you for the breath in my lungs today. Thank you for giving me the ability to speak with your Holy Spirit, who guides and teaches me daily. During the trials of life that I’m experiencing, I pray that I may remember to remain joyful in my pain, joyful in my suffering, because good is waiting on the other side. May your Spirit guide me and keep me on the path of perseverance and peace. Thank you for being near even when I’m down.
